Latest News from Knockane GAA - 2006

OCT - NOV - DEC 2006

Congratulations to former Chairman, John Franklin, who was recently elected vice chairman of the East Limerick GAA Board, the first Knockane man to occupy a place at the top table of a board first set up in 1944.

Following a recent Club AGM in Dec. 2006 at Garrydoolis N.S. the following officers were returned; Chairman: Denis Fitzgerald, Vice-Chairman: Roger Butler, Secretary: Diarmuid Grace, Assistant Secretary: Tom O'Donnell, Treasurer: Peter Commons, Assistant Treasurer: Bryan Boland, PRO: Donal Grace.

The East Board Awards night takes place next Fri. night and will feature an honourary award to Mike Nash, Knockane Cross. (See tribute below)

Michael Nash

Coming from a household steeped in Gaelic tradition Michael played football from a very young age.  He was in his early teens when he set out to emulate the feats of his uncle Jim Nash who won All Ireland football honours with Limerick in 1896.

Michael first donned the green and gold of Knockane in 1934 when a very youthful team took part in the Limerick championship.  This side included such famous names as Denis Fitzgerald (Capt.), Denis Whelan, Martin Ryan, Percy Ryan, Tom Slattery and Dick Foley captured the South Limerick championship at the first attempt. They were unlucky to loose 1 – 3 to 1 –1 Foynes in the county final. They returned to Pairc Na Gael again in 1935 where they beat St. Patrick’s for county honours.

Michael played a key role in the forward line during those hectic days and contributed much to the scoreboard. From 1936 onwards his team played at senior level and in 1940 the ultimate crown came to Knockane. Michael also wore the Limerick Senior jersey and played in the company of the Mackey brothers, Jackie Power and others who were his opponents in many Knockane Vs Ahane duels.

Michael was for many years his club secretary and an excellent delegate to board level. The county board trusted him to referee some very important games including a county final in his home pitch.

Michael’s father Johnny Nash was also a club official as well as being a footballer of renown in his day. The Nash’s are cousins to the famous hurling family of the South Liberties club. Outside of the G.A.A. Michael always played a prominent part in his local community and was for many years involved in the P.T.A.A. movement, The Sacred Heart Confraternity and the Legion of Mary. We wish him well in his retirement and hope he will be with us for many more years to come.

JULY - AUG - SEPT 2006

On Sat 1st July, a group from Pallasgreen GAA Club called to the GAA field on their course of scoring a goal and a point in every Limerick GAA club grounds. This was all in aid of Milford Hospice.

Junior B Football Championship second round saw Knockane suffer defeat to Murroe/Boher on the scoreline: Knockane 0-6, Murroe/Boher 4-11 in a match played in Pallasgreen on Sun. 2nd July. Concession of 2 early goals against a strong, fit opposition as well as a failure to take our chances, leave us needing a result against Oola next weekend to progress in this year's championship.

Round 3 of the football championship saw Knockane suffer defeat to Oola on the scoreline: Knockane 3-4, Oola 3-11 in a game played in Pallasgreen. We still have a slim chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.Round 4 of the football championship, the bad run of results continued with defeat at the hands of Pallasgreen on bank holiday Monday 7th August followed by a first round defeat in the hurling championship at the hands of Cappamore by 5-11 to 0-6, a team which we defeated after a replay at the same stage last year.
